Sabarimala
Sabarimala
Introduction
Sabarimala is one of the most famous and revered pilgrimage sites in India, located in the Western Ghats in Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, a Hindu deity believed to be the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini, the female incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Sabarimala Temple is nestled in a dense forest region at an altitude of around 914 meters (3,000 feet) above sea level, and it attracts millions of devotees annually, especially during the Mandala-Makaravilakku season (from November to January).
Sabarimala holds immense religious and cultural significance, and it is unique due to its strict rituals, the austere journey required to reach the temple, and the large number of devotees, many of whom undertake a pilgrimage in the spirit of penance. The temple is also known for its traditional practices, including the ban on female devotees of menstruating age, though this has been a topic of legal and social discussion in recent years.
